July 2008: Pollocks London will be showing one Julie Bennett’s paintings ‘Nikki’ along with other leading and emerging artists, including Mark Quinn, Annie Lennox, Levi Palmer and Rankin in a Carnaby Street exhibition to raise money for Breast Cancer. 27 June- 6 July 2008 at Pollocks London, 1-2 Carnaby Street, London W1FÊ
The striking paintings of British artist Julie Bennett have become a familiar sight in London’s contemporary art scene.

Since November 2006 when the Independent newspaper described her as one of Saatchi’s ‘new stars’ her figurative style has been exhibited with Saatchi at London’s Olympia art fair FORM, Sartorial Gallery in Notting Hill and Transition Gallery in Hackney.

The starting point for Julie Bennett’s distinctive paintings is popular culture. Bombarded by the aspirational images of glamour, fame, celebrity and beauty, she translates everyday faces into bold, expressive, multi-layered works of art.

Bennett uses oil, gloss, acrylic paint and gestural brushwork as part of her transformation process. Paint and subject become one, turning the superficial mass culture she is influenced by, into high art. Her personal interpretations of the human face result in paintings that are much more than portraits.

Bennett is at the forefront of a new wave of painters, as she creates new identities for the anonymous and androgynous faces that she selects from the world of magazines.
